Four former U.S. Defense Secretaries are jointly calling for their country and China to increase military exchanges to build up more mutual trust.

Chuck Hagel, William Cohen, William Perry, and Harold Brown have made the call at a meeting of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations.

Cohen, Defense Secretary under former US President Bill Clinton, is suggesting the US and Chinese militaries should be taking part in more joint exercises.

William Perry, who also served under Clinton in his first term, is suggesting more minister-level talks.

All four former Pentagon chiefs also say U.S. military academies should open up spots to help train PLA officers.

The National Committee on U.S.-China Relations is a nonprofit organization that hopes to create stronger ties between China and the United States.

It is holding a series of events to celebrate its 50th anniversary this year.
