Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, has congratulated Hung Hsiu-chu for being elected as the chairperson of the Kuomintang party in Taiwan.

In his message, Xi Jinping says he hopes the two parties will keep the overall national interest and the well-being of compatriots in mind, and continue to adhere to the 1992 Consensus and oppose "Taiwan independence."

Hung replies that she hopes the two parties could further strengthen mutual trust and deepen cooperation on the basis of the 1992 Consensus.

Hung Hsiu-chu, Taiwan"s former deputy legislative speaker, was elected the chairperson of Kuomintang on Saturday to become the party"s first female leader.

Speaking after the win, 68-year-old Hung said she would spare no efforts in dealing with the challenges facing the party.

"I will fulfill my promise by working tirelessly and doing my utmost to revive and rebuild our party."
Hung garnered over 56 percent of the total vote, to beat the other three candidates.

The election was held after Eric Chu resigned from the post to take responsibility for the defeat in the island"s leadership election.

In that election held in Janurary, Eric Chu lost to Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive Party.
